(Stefanie) -update-Joburg man tests negative for Ebola South Africa Monday 18 August 2014 - 2:53pm JOHANNESBURG - A 37-year-old man who showed symptoms of Ebola, has tested negative for the virus. The Ministry of Health and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said in a statement that the patient is in a stable condition in the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. The results of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) are negative. We have also conducted the tests for Malaria and the results are also negative, said health department spokesman Joe Maila. We are busy conducting further tests for other infections and continue with our appropriate management of the patient. The department said the man -- who works for a mining company in Liberia -- did not have contact with Ebola patients. He was cleared by scanners at OR Tambo International Airport when he arrived in South Africa more than a week ago, but he developed a high fever two days ago. Nigeria now has 12 confirmed cases of the Ebola virus. The death toll remains at four, but nearly 200 patients are under surveillance. In Liberia, several Ebola patients are still missing. They fled when youths attacked a quarantine centre on Saturday where they were being treated. The region is battling to contain the disease as myths are spread about it. More than a thousand people in West Africa have now died from Ebola. Some airlines have stopped flying to affected countries. But the World Health Organisation says travel restrictions arent necessary. Health authorities in West Africa say the number of infections and deaths are underestimated and the outbreak is much worse than previously thought.
