Andile Mngxitama, Pieter Groenewald in street fight Rapule Tabane@City_Press19 June 2014 18:03 The Economic Freedom Fighters’ struggle for land is taking on a more personal tone after EFF commissar on land, Andile Mngxitama, and the Freedom Front’s Pieter Groenewald had to be restrained after a near fistfight outside the National Assembly this afternoon. Inside the House, EFF leader Julius Malema was called to order after he repeatedly interjected during Pieter Mulder’s speech, shouting “Bring back our land. You stole our land. Ons soek die plaas.” An impatient chairperson of the House, Thandi Modise, in warning Malema ended up saying: “Honourable Malema, don’t push me!” But matters got out of hand during the short break in the afternoon session. Groenewald walked past Mngxitama, who was standing outside eating. He went up to Mngxitama, pointing his finger, and touched him on the chest while trying to say something. Before he could say anything, Mngxitama shouted: “Don’t touch me! Don’t f***ing touch me. You stole our land and we want it back.” Mulder again tried to touch him. Mngxitama pulled himself away and warned Groenewald again. Groenewald then shouted: “What can you do? What can you do? You can bring it on. You can come to my house. I will be waiting for you.” The two were separated by two passers-by. The EFF has prioritsed the land issue. In his speech yesterday, Mngxitama said the EFF was prepared to offer the ANC a two-thirds majority to enable it to change the constitutional provisions on land. “The first act promulgated by the first democratic Parliament was the Land Restitution Act and it was no mistake because land is everything. “National consensus has long been reached that all SA land is stolen property: that we must not buy back our land. Every ANC conference has confirmed the declaration from the 2005 National Land Summit that willing seller willing buyer must be scrapped,” Mngxitama said in his speech. In its manifesto, the EFF called for the expropriation of land without compensation for equitable redistribution. It proposes that all land should be transferred to the ownership and custodianship of the state. “State custodianship of land will mean that those who currently occupy land should apply for licensing to continue using the land and should clearly state in the application what they want to use the land for over a period of time…”
