Stein to be honored as 50-year Lion Richard Stein Posted: Thursday, September 26, 2013 12:50 pm BY RICHARD TEDESCO The Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce and the New Hyde Park Lions Club are honoring the late Richard Stein Sr., a 50-year Lions Club member, at the organizations’ annual golf outing at Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington on Oct. 2. Stein was active in community organizations, including both the BPO Elks of New Hyde Park and the New Hyde Park Lions. He served as both a deputy district governor and president of the Lions Club. He also ran the annual Christmas tree lot to raise money for the Lions Club for many years. He died in February at the age of 82 after a long illness. “He was a good father. He was a good businessman,” said Ed Falconer, New Hyde Park Lions Club president. Stein was president of R&S and Sons Inc., an electrical contracting company he established in 1955. A graduate of Sewanhaka High School, Stein served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Alaska during his two years of service. The co-sponsored golf outing raises money for various charitable causes, including the New Hyde Park Gladiators Fund, the Wounded Warrior Project, Katie’s Run, the Ronald McDonald House and the Lions Club’s Casey Falconer Scholarship Fund. The Gladiators Fund assists local families in need of support for serious medical problems. The Wounded Warrior is a project among Nassau County fire departments to give financial aid to wounded veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Katie’s Run is an annual 5K race honoring Katie McBride, the late daughter of Michael McBride, director of the New Hyde Park Funeral Home. The event also helps support the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber Fund, the Lions Club’s holiday gift certificates for the needy program and a fund for four scholarships the Lions Club awards to New Hyde Park Memorial High School graduates each year. Last year, the organization’s raised $40,000 at the golf outing in memory of Casey Falconer, Ed Falconer’s son, who died last year. Stein’s son, Michael, also a Lions Club member, said he is pleased the organization is honoring his father’s memory. “It’s great. It’s a great thing,” Stein said. “He was past president. It’s a great organization.” The tribute seems particularly fitting since Stein said his father was an avid golfer.
