Stenhousemuir 1 East Fife 1 Scottish League One, Ochilview Park Saturday 5th October 2013 Match Report by Liam Thomson East Fife came from behind to pick up their first point from an away fixture in this season’s league campaign thanks to a goal from captain Craig Johnstone. Stenhousemuir went into the match looking to bounce back after their 8-0 mauling last weekend at Ibrox. East Fife made one change to the line up that started against Airdrie last week with Scott Durie replacing Paul Willis on the right side of the midfield. The Warriors almost went ahead in the 4th minute when Darren Smith struck a right footed shot from outside the box which cannoned off the woodwork. Pat Clarke had a great chance to get his name on the score sheet in the 7th minute when a Ross Brown cross found him 8 yards out but his diving header went just wide. Five minutes later Ross Brown tried his luck from 20 yards out but Chris Smith in the Stenhousemuir goal was able to save comfortably. Clarke had another opportunity in the 20th minute when he got his head on a Scott McBride cross but he didn’t manage to get his attempt on target. It was the home side that took the lead when referee Andrew Dallas ruled that East Fife goalkeeper Greg Paterson had brought an opponent down in the area and consequently awarded a spot kick to Martyn Corrigan’s side. John Gemmell, so often a thorn in East Fife’s side over the years, stepped up and sent the ball straight down the centre and into the back of the net as Paterson dived to his right. In the 27th minute the travelling East Fife support congregated at the terrace end were adamant that their side should have been awarded a penalty when Johnstone appeared to be brought down in the Stenhousemuir box. Indeed this wasn’t to be the first time that referee Dallas proved to be a cause of frustration with the Fife fans, with another penalty appeal turned down soon afterwards. Just before the interval The Fifers restored parity. Pat Clarke passed the ball across the face of the goal to Craig Johnstone who was able to finish the move with ease from very close range. Neither side could find the winner in the second period as both teams battled hard. In the 78th minute Steven Campbell got a header on a corner from the left side of the six yard box but his effort went high and wide. Special mention must be made of Campbell who was a colossus at the back and some of his defending was exceptional especially in the second half. Right at the death both sides came close to snatching all three points. Substitute Cyrus Moosavi had a crack from the right side of the box that went narrowly wide before Greg Paterson denied Sean Dickson.
