Stephen Kings Danse Macabre was published in 1981. (sorry, I thought it was 1976 for some reason.) So, lets not get worked up over a 33 year quote that is clearly biased toward sword-&-sorcery. If you want to get worked up, you can pick apart this one, which appeared in 2005. Introduction to Michelle Houllebecqs H. P. Lovecraft: Against the World, Against Life: ...beginning with the Texas prodigy Robert E. Howard, whose stories of Conan the Barbarian are in many cases barely disguised Lovecraft pastiches and gave birth to an entire genre... Now, THAT is mindbogglingly stupid. You might argue that some of REHs horror is barely disguised Lovecraft - but Conan? No. There might have been a Mythos tang in the air in some of the stories, but no way in hell is ANY Conan story a barely disguised Lovecraft pastiche. That is a seriously off-the-cuff, unsubstantiated statement!
