#Stepmother who #beat son escapes #prosecution Police in southern China’s #Guangdong Province have decided not to press charges against a woman who had violently beaten her 10-year-old stepson, Bin Bin, for several years, according to a report from China Daily. The story first broke when Guangzhou Daily published a report detailing the abuse. According to the paper, the boy would often be beaten when he came home from school, sometimes with hangers and brooms. His body was also found to have burns. The boy’s father worked in Dongguan most of the year and was rarely home. According to local police, the decision to not pursue legal action was made after requests from the boy and his father. Corporal punishment has deep roots in China as a traditional method of disciplining children and is still widely practiced among parents. It’s a practice, however, that an increasing number of experts feel must be reformed. The government needs to strengthen public education on preventing and stopping domestic violence toward children. If there are special laws that allow people to report such crimes, it will help solve the problem, said Wang Biaochen, a lawyer at the department of rights protection at the Guangdong Womens Federation. The story drew a furious reaction from Chinese Internet users on Sina Weibo. “Put aside the stepmother, is the father deaf or blind? This is not a one-day thing, and he didn’t find out. So what it means is that his father covered up or he’s a conspirator.” @Zhuxiaomeidezhubaobei “… I hope the biological mother takes back the boy. He’s only 10 years old, how could anyone treat him so badly! I don’t think the boy’s father or aunt cares for him very much. Fortunately his teacher discovered the crime. But the help was just for the time being, and can not save him for the whole life.” @iivany “She’s not a human being. How could she beat the boy so badly? Child #abuse is the most hateful thing!” @mymeiyu (With inputs from China Daily, and Shanghai Daily.)
