Steppin’ out By Greg Ebie It’s not a huge step, but it was one we as a church hadn’t taken before. Last April we moved to two Sunday morning services. We thought about taking this action once before, but there was not enough support to move forward then. I’m excited about what God is doing at our church. God brings us to places in our lives where we must make a choice. We will either step out in faith, or we will hold back in fear. The nation of Israel was confronted with such a choice as it prepared to enter the Promised Land. Moses sent 12 spies to scout the land. After 40 days they returned to camp and reported to Moses and the people. It was a good land “flowing with milk and honey,” but unfortunately the spies did not all give the same report about moving forward to take possession of the land. “Caleb interrupted, called for silence before Moses and said, ‘Let’s go up and take the land — now. We can do it.’ “But the others said, ‘We can’t attack those people; they’re way stronger than we are. … Alongside them we felt like grasshoppers. And they looked down on us as if we were grasshoppers.’” (Numbers 13:30,31,33, The Message) Joshua and Caleb wanted to step out in faith to take the land. While they saw the same fortified cities with people who looked like giants, they also saw by faith that God had removed the protection of the people in the region. Joshua and Caleb knew if the Israelites would put their faith in God none of the “giants” would be able to stand against them. However, the other 10 spies held back in fear. They discouraged the people with a bad report. Unable or unwilling to open their eyes of faith, they only saw the land and its people with natural eyes. Thus, they felt like grasshoppers that would be squashed by the giants. Fear won the day and the Israelites held back unwilling to step out in faith and take the land God had given to them.
