Steve signing in at 7:40 AM. Patchy fog this morning should burn off in another hour or two. Temperatures range from 65 - 70°, 69.3° at BW Headquarters in Valdese NC. Under mainly sunny skies today well see temperatures rise to near 90° in the afternoon. Well probably also see building clouds in the afternoon, too, but any thunderstorms that develop should be isolated to widely scattered in nature, I dont foresee widespread coverage. There may be more thunderstorms in the mountains where the atmosphere is not quite as capped as it may be in the piedmont areas of Catawba County. An isolated severe storm is not out of the question, again, primarily in the mountains. Overnight tonight an area of organized thunderstorms ahead of an approaching cold front tries to make a run at the mountains but I think its probably going to break up over eastern Tennessee before it reaches our counties. Again isolated storms are possible and one or two could have gusty winds but I dont anticipate widespread coverage. By daybreak Tuesday, the strong cold front should be entering the mountains. Right now its looking like the front should have good momentum and cross our counties and the I-40 corridor later in the morning before much daytime heating and destabilization occurs. Thus, our chances of seeing severe storms out of this system dont look as great as, say, Charlotte or Salisbury or Greensboro, locations east of us. We should see a period of heavy rain or two with thunder however as the front moves through and if, for some reason, the front slows down a little, we could see some strong storms. The best chance of strong to severe storms, though, appears to be from the Triad to the Triangle area of NC tomorrow and eastward, especially if low pressure develops along the front. Hail and damaging wind would be the main threats if any severe occurs. The big news will be the cooler temperatures starting Tuesday night. By Wednesday morning a lot of us will see upper 50s and lower 60s, warming to the low 80s Wednesday afternoon with reduced humidity--quite pleasant weather for July. This rare weather treat should last through Thursday before clouds increase again along with rain chances on Friday as the front begins to retreat ahead of another storm system to our west and north.
