Steve signing in at 7:40 AM. Skies are mostly clear this morning with temperatures right around freezing. Gusty winds continue and will last most of today, though not around advisory levels. In fact, for the next several days March will show its true colors with gusty afternoon breezes Friday and maybe Saturday, too. Strongest winds overnight occurred at Boone, not surprisingly, with sustained peaking at 40mph, gusts to 60mph. Hickory recorded a gust to 45mph and the Foothills AP a gust to 41mph; both these occurred with the passage of the cold front around 5 PM yesterday. The northwest flow snow is dying out and by later this morning, everyone will see sunshine with temperatures reaching or getting just above 50F along the I-40 corridor. The big weather problem today will be the fire danger as Chris pointed out below, a RED FLAG WARNING is in effect during the daytime hours. Outdoor burning is not prudent today and probably not Friday afternoon either. In addition to winds gusting to 25mph, relative humidity by 5PM will be down around 15%. After a clear and chilly night, Friday will be warmer with a gusty southwesterly breeze kicking in during the afternoon, temperatures in the 65 to 70F range. Friday night will not be as cold either but clouds will gather overnight into Saturday as another disturbance and front take shape over the southern Plains. After near 70F temperatures Saturday evening features an increasing chance of rain that continues through Sunday into part of Monday. As the disturbance and front move eastward, more cold air could spill into the counties late Sunday night changing the rain to snow in the foothills before all precipitation ends around midday Monday. Snow may fall for a longer time in the mountains where accumulations are more likely but even the I-40 corridor could see up to an inch on grassy surfaces before its all over. After a chilly Monday, though, temperatures begin to moderate through next week until the next front approaches sometime Thursday or Friday.
