Steve signing in at 7:42 AM. Clear skies and good visibility this morning, temps ranging from 50° at Brindletown and Table Rock to 51° at Old Fort, 55.6° at Burke Weather HQ in Valdese and 57° at Hickory. Expect a sunny, pleasantly warm day with light northerly winds, afternoon highs around 80°. After the round of morning thunderstorms yesterday morning, isolated supercell storms re-developed yesterday afternoon over the SC Upstate just to the south of Charlotte. I post from Fort Mill SC and I experienced probably the worst hailstorm of my life with baseball size hail. There was some minor structural damage to my house and damage to vehicles in my neighborhood. This storm was reminiscent of the ones we experienced both in Fort Mill and in Burke County on April 9, 2011. The trigger in both cases was the same: a back door cold front. Back door fronts in Spring in the Carolinas have to be watched carefully because the colder temperatures aloft and the northwest to southeast or west to east upper level flow, especially with some atmospheric instability like I had yesterday afternoon, can contribute to damaging hail formation. I mention this also because we may be looking another back door front later next week, possibly Thursday. In the meantime, moisture and humidity will begin to return to the four county area beginning Sunday. Isolated pop-up showers and a thundershower or two are possible Sunday afternoon with slightly better coverage on Memorial Day. Temperatures will slowly rise also, with low 80s Sunday, mid 80s Monday. Next Tuesday may actually be fairly dry but as the front begins to sag southward Wednesday and especially Thursday, scattered daily afternoon thunderstorms become an increasing threat. Its too soon to say whether well face another severe wind/hail event Thursday but its something to watch.
