Steve signing in at 7:56 AM. Mainly fair to partly cloudy skies this morning and muggy, temperatures in the low 70s, with low 60s in the higher elevations. Burke Weather HQ at Valdese reports 70°. Closest rain showers to us right now are up in Virginia with the heaviest activity extending from Wytheville and the I-77/I-81 junction westward to north of Abingdon near the Tennessee State line or, basically, along I-81 from Wytheville to Bristol. I think these showers are going to stay north of us as they move east-southeastward but it might be a close call especially for northern Caldwell County. Although we had some isolated strong storms overnight last night, our atmosphere did not get worked over as expected. Thus, we stand a better chance of seeing thunderstorms this afternoon and a few could be severe with possible large hail and damaging winds. The cold front right now, as far as Ive been able to determine, stretches from about Prestonsburg KY to Beckley and Lewisburg WV to Charlottesville VA, placing it about 150 to 175 miles north of us. This front should continue to drift southward during the day reaching the I-40 corridor probably by late afternoon. Just ahead of the front scattered thunderstorms should fire up with the greatest threat to communities along and south of I-40 today, say Claremont, Newton, Hickory, Icard, Valdese, Morganton, Brindletown and Dysartsville. Conditions suggest that a few of these thunderstorms could become severe with large hail in the northwest flow aloft as well as damaging downburst winds. The front stalls out not too far south of us at all later this evening and really doesnt go anywhere the entire weekend. Right now Im also watching an area of organized thunderstorms way out over Kansas. I dont think these storms are going to bother us but there is a slight chance that the energy from this system and the associated cold pools from individual storms could mix with our own frontal dynamics later today and if that happens there could be an enhanced severe storm threat somewhere in western North Carolina. At the moment it looks like the front should be to our south if and when this happens but it is something to keep in mind. Otherwise, expect scattered afternoon showers and storms Friday through the weekend with temperatures reaching the low or mid 80s each afternoon, low to mid 60s in the evenings. Coverage may not be too widespread but the potential is there as long as that front lingers just to our south. I dont really see much change in the weather picture through next week although by the end of the week, some tropical moisture may feed into the area which could give us more storms and potentially, more rain.
