Steve signing in at 8:25 AM. Partly cloudy skies this morning with temperatures ranging from 64° at Brindletown to 70° at Hickory. We should see a mostly sunny day today with warm temperatures in the upper 80s this afternoon. A week back door cold front could provide the focus for isolated thunderstorms but it appears that most of the activity stays along the NC/TN state line during the daytime hours and into the early evening. Even though the prospects for storms do not look good today, I wouldnt totally rule them out with a front, even a weak front, in the area. Most outdoor activities, including the football games, should be unaffected but pay attention to the skies. If a storm does develop it could produce frequent lightning and strong gusty winds. Actually, rain chances look better later this evening into the overnight after the games are over. It appears that the front drifts northward and washes out over western North Carolina and isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms develop along the retreating frontal boundary. Although I dont foresee any major issues, a few of you could be awakened by a rumble of thunder. Saturday appears to be the best day of the next seven. We should get by rain-free with sunny skies, temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. Showers and storms should be sparse in coverage and confined mainly to the border counties. We face a greater threat of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday with more instability during the afternoon, steeper temperature falls with height, and more available moisture to work with. Problem is there is no wind shear to speak of so any storms that develop could anchor in the same place producing heavy, possibly excessive rainfall and potentially posing a problem with street flooding. Under partly cloudy skies, highs Sunday should be in the mid 80s before the storms arrive. Labor Day should be a lot like Sunday with perhaps a bit less storm coverage, highs again in the mid 80s under partly sunny skies. I think most outdoor activities should be fine but be alert for threatening weather in case youre one of the unlucky 30% affected by shower or storm activity. The rest of the week is pretty much a carbon copy of Monday with scattered afternoon thunderstorms, mid to upper 80s. The Bermuda High may actually drift into the southeastern US, reinforcing our mid-summer weather pattern and fending off any approaching cool fronts.
