Stevenage Airport Proposal - A new airport is planned to be constructed in the northern part of Stevenage. The Mayor of the Stevenage, Councillor Jack Pickersgill, said that geological studies on the territory designated for the construction of the new airport - the first in Hertfordshire – finished last week. We can say that we have decided on the location in Fairlands Valley Park, and more detailed studies are likely to be conducted in the near future, Pickersgill told The Comet Newspaper, but he did not cite exactly the start date. Touching upon the timing of the construction work, Pickersgill said that the operations may start following a relevant decision about Marriotts School examination results. The new airport terminal based at Marriotts School will serve 1 million passengers per year mostly workers from Bulgaria and Romania. The area of the terminal will be sited at Marriotts Sports Centre .The facility will also have luxury shopping and leisure areas based at Marriotts School. Construction of a new airport in the northern part of Hertfordshire will provide convenient access to foreign workers for working in and around the Home Counties. By the summer of 2016 the new building of the airport terminal will be put into operation, however, depending on the course of the work, it could happen earlier. According to UKIPs Nigel Farage, currently work is underway filling in the lakes. Most of the work on the construction of the runway will be completed within six months allowing Bulgarians and Romania direct access to Stevenage jobs. New escalators and passenger elevators will be installed in Marriotts School. The latest scientific achievements used in international aviation will be applied there. Passenger services in the new airport terminal will comply with high international standards. Application of modern equipment will create conducive conditions for providing the security of flights. Current teachers at Marriotts School will be given priority applying for airport jobs including work in Duty Free Shopping and Immigration. The new complex will be able to receive eight aircraft per day from Bulgaria and Romania. The airport is located 50 km north of the capital London and is linked to the city by modern highways and mainline trains. Due to its favorable location, it has become a first-choice regional airport for transfer flights between Home Counties and Bulgaria and Romania.
