Steyning Grammar School Year 11 Prom & Leavers Assembly June 2013 As 280 Year 11 students from Steyning Grammar School started to arrive at the Effingham Park hotel near Gatwick, teachers were able to stand back and admire the various different forms of transport, ranging from buses to pink limos. Right on cue the clouds cleared and the sun came out. With girls looking gorgeous and boys looking beautiful, this year’s Prom promised to be a memorable occasion. Students sipped fruit punch on the lawn or had their photos taken with friends. Suddenly the rumour went round - we had opened the doors and our handsome students were permitted into the Millennium Suite. The talented Prom committee had selected the colour scheme - burgundy and cream - and the hotel had put the drapes and fairy lights up so the room looked spectacular. Tables were decorated with balloons and confetti and the favours that had taken so much time and energy added a beautiful finishing touch to the room. Food was served at 8 and by 9 everyone was full up and waiting for the speeches to be over with so that the dancing could begin…right on cue Rebecca van Pelt and Kallum Salleem stepped up to the microphone and handed out thank-yous to lots of people, as well as giving out all the usual Prom prizes culminating in the main prizes of Prom King and Queen. This year this award was won by Nicole Allen and Reuben Selby - what a beautiful couple they are! Another popular award was to Mr Hegarty, PE teacher for “best hair on a boy”! We were incredibly lucky with the weather - it stayed fine throughout - and everyone had a good time with our students conducting themselves perfectly. The Prom ended at 11 pm on the dot and students left for after-parties or bed, depending on their preferences. The next morning we could see who had made which choices, as the students arrived in school to complete their book return, collect Leavers’ hoodies and attend the Leavers’ Assembly on Leavers’ Day. Parents, carers, grannies and aunties had all been invited in for this auspicious occasion, and the assembly did not disappoint - there were slide shows and certificates and quite a bit of emotion at some of the main award winners. We welcomed guests from the Millennium Trust who presented certificates and prize money to Molly Parker and Myer Short, for Steyning Millennium Trust Awards. We also met Tamsin Outridge who presented the Tony Russell award to Megan Page, not a dry eye in the room for that one! The assembly finished with a farewell speech and presentation to Mr Taylor who is leaving the school at the end of this school year, again by Rebecca van Pelt and Kallum Salleem, our Year 11 reps.
