Still More Notes: 3. Jiu Jutsu: Falling There are two options when the ground is approaching you rapidly: 1. set up a sharp, explosive counter-force against the ground to stop you before you hit (slap out), OR 2. roll your body with the force propelling you (i.e. your opponents throw) so that you encounter the ground with the force transmitted in an arc along your body (roll) SLAP OUT: The idea here is that your hands (and possibly forearms) slap the ground as hard as possible an instant before the rest of you would hit the ground. YOU ARE NOT CATCHING YOURSELF AND TRYING TO EASE THE FALL! Rather, you are using all the power you can snap out quickly to create a counter force that will stop you short (falling forward/sideways) or reduce the impact of the fall (falling backward) When falling backward, also remember to keep the head up (chin tucked towards chest), so that your head doesnt whiplash back despite you breaking the fall. When falling forward, youre essentially slamming your hands down into push-up position. Video of SLAP OUT Breakfalls: https://youtube/watch?v=NFPPrhxPFR4 (also a good brief example of rolling) ROLLING: When you are projected forward as well as down, the idea is to make an arc of your arm-shoulder-back so that the force of the fall is channeled DIAGONALLY across your back (as opposed to a somersault, which moves the force vertically along the arc of the spine).
