Still in keeping with my theme of aloes, another institution which features an aloe on its coat of arms is Lovedale Press in Alice. Lovedale Press is the only publisher of isiXhosa books in the Eastern Cape. It was founded in 1824 as part of Lovedale Mission, a mission station established by the Glasgow Missionary Society of Scotland. The motto of Lovedale Press is the Latin phrase "Nisi Dominus frustra", which has been the motto of the city of Edinburgh in Scotland since 1647. The phrase literally means "except the Lord, [it is] in vain", that is, "everything is in vain without God". It is summarised from Psalm 127, "Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum, in vanum laboraverunt qui aedificant eam. Nisi Dominus custodierit civitatem, frustra vigilavit qui custodit" (Unless the Lord builds the house, they work on a useless thing who build it; unless the Lord guards the community, he keeps watch in vain who guards it). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Latin_phrases_(N)
