Sons are a heritage from the Lord. / Psalm 127:3 Radio host Michael Savage barely has a clue about the Christian faith, but at least sometimes he brings up important points on his broadcast. Earlier this week, I heard him talking about the demographic suicide of European nations. Many of those nations, notably Spain, Italy and Greece, have so low a birthrate in their main ethnic groups, that it is already too late for them to recover and rebuild their populations; they are going to be submerged by their Muslim immigrants. This raised a related thought for me. When the Catholic Church had to replace Pope John Paul the Second, I said that they should elect Cardinal Arinze of Nigeria as their next Pope, disarming everyone who charges the Roman communion with racism. The College of Cardinals chose instead to elect a blah, business-as-usual candidate; but if the world even continues long enough for this to be an issue, they may be knocking at Arinzes door anyway in a few more years. Theyll be asking him to help them set up an African Vatican, because Muslims will have thrown them out of Italy, whereas Christianity in many forms remains viable in Africa. (Native Christians of many African countries are now sending out missionaries to other lands to bring the good news of Jesus.) The disappearance of Europeans from large parts of Europe cant be prevented; but we can ask, as Michael Savage asked, why so many white Europeans -- along with millions of Americans both white and black-- dont want to bother even replacing themselves. Marriage and child-raising, though not impossible to separate, are two things which go together by nature. And in our time, both traditions face many who reject them. Michael Savage, with the concurrence of callers to his program, declared that narcissistic selfishness, the me-first attitude, is to blame for this. Spoiled yuppies, and their various equivalents, exist for immediate fun and pleasure; they don’t want babies slowing them down and causing them to miss the cool parties. There is truth in this assessment of the problem; but I see another, closely related factor also at work. Both marriage and children remind us that we are mortal. If we were like the never-aging Elves in Lord of the Rings, there would be no urgency about raising a new generation to carry on after us. As it is, the fact that nature does 93
