Still processing this from last night. Here is the scene. I am at the Mercurys on a table. Everyone is having a tremendous old time. Then a girl I *vaguely* know (and by vaguely I mean, I have met them twice for a total of about five minutes at conferences – cant remember her name or what she does) comes up to the table as is chatting away to me as if I am her best mate. Its all a bit awkward and I do the old quickly talk to the person next to me or look at my phone to give her the hint that maybe its time to go. Eventually nature takes over and *I* have to go to the toilet. So I leave, bump into some people on the way back who I actually know and have a chat with them. Lose track of time a bit so am away for maybe 10 minutes. Come back and shes still there but now conspicuously being ignored by the other people on the table who, literally, have no idea who she is. She then sees there is an uneaten dinner on the table. She announces that shes been in the media room and has had no dinner. Then asks if she can eat that dinner. We say the other people are coming back (turns out they werent but we didnt know that) so she ignores us and just starts to eat the dinner. The host of the table tries to interject by, in the awkward English way, of introducing herself and asking who this new guest is. Girl introduces herself and carries on eating the dinner. Host is now utterly wrongfooted and cant say anything. I am rendered speechless as I cant believe this is all happening. Dinner girl finishes the dinner and then just gets up and leaves. We all look at each other in a daze and then go That was really weird. 15 minutes later, the waiters come round with dessert and set them down at each place. We are having dessert and then the girl reappears, says nothing, sits down and gets stuck into a dessert, finishes it and then wanders off. In a strange way you have to admire the audacity of it all. Who does that? Well, we know that she does. But really. Maybe shes the new Jeremy Beadle and it was all a prank to expose British people who will let people do anything and avoid causing a scene. Dinner AND dessert. Two sittings. Incredible. Camerons Britain. Etc.
