Stingers 5 Wheatley Wanderers Blue 1 Stingers entertained unfamiliar opponents in Wheatley Wanderers Blue in their 4th league fixture of the season at Coulman Road. Having faced the club`s Red U!2s in various cups & tournaments in what always turned out to be thrilling encounters, this tie was to be dominated by the home side who, after a shaky start to the season, were re-discovering their title-winning form of last season. Right from the first whistle, Stingers were at it, Reece Finley looked set to open the scoring early on, a linesman`s flag halting him after a great cross by fullback Ben Taylor. Cameron Denby was next to threaten, getting to the left hand bye-line before his cross was blocked. The pair went close again, Reece heading over, this time Ryan Chappell providing the cross before Cameron fired just over from range after great work on the left by Alex Young. Alex would then see his effort cleared off the line after a corner from Archie Taylor, who was causing the visitors all kinds of problems with his dead ball deliveries. With 24 minutes on the clock, midfielder Cameron again tried his luck from range, his effort looked in all the way, somehow it whistled the wrong side of the upright & remarkably the scores were still level. Stingers were rampant, switching play to & from either flank. Ben Taylor & Alex were the threat on the left while Reece & full back Will Weir were causing Wheatley problems down the right. Indeed Will nearly got himself on the score sheet before half time with a long range effort that was creeping just under the crossbar, the busy Wheatley keeper alert enough to push it over for yet another Stingers corner. With 5 minutes of the half remaining, Archie whipped in another fierce corner & REECE FINLEY glanced a fine header into the far corner of goal to finally give Stingers the breakthrough. The visitors must have been glad to see him take an early half-time break but the introduction of James Taylor soon posed them a fresh problem, James` electrifying pace instantly threatened as he raced down the right flank, his cross sailed behind for a goal kick on this occasion. Alex would have the final effort of the half, his shot going just wide. HT Stingers 1 Wheatley 0 Stingers were urged to keep up the tempo but also keep patient in their quest for more goals. They wouldn`t have long to wait, however, from another corner 2 minutes into the 2nd half RYAN CHAPPELL ghosted in on the far post to fire home for 2-0. Ryan`s next contribution would be a great ball out to Alex Young who, showing great feet, bought himself half a yard to get in a shot on goal. It proved to be a little close to the keeper this time, & he dealt with it well. Centre back Joel White was next to be thwarted by the keeper after attending another corner floated in this time by Ryan with Archie having a quick rest. Archie was soon re-introduced though, now pairing up with Ross Asquith in the midfield & back on dead-ball duties. His next corner would break out to Will Weir who danced through the Wheatley defence before getting a shot away. With the keeper parrying yet again RYAN CHAPPELL was again on hand to collect his brace, the Wheatley contingent looking hopefully for a flag that stayed down, the score extended to 3-0 with 15 minutes remaining. It was very nearly 4 moments later, Reece`s shot saved, the follow-up from Alex just over the bar. Stingers then paid the price for playing a very high defensive line, understandably given the amount of possession they were enjoying. Wheatley, with one of their only attacks. would break away & Tyler was left facing two attackers, the odds were stacked against him & the score would read 3-1. Stingers were un-deterred, possession would soon be regained, Joel played out the remainder of the game on the halfway line & anything that went beyond him was tidied up by sweeper/keeper Tyler Wilkinson now playing not too far behind him, not that much did as the home side`s dominance was re-asserted. Two more goals would come from REECE FINLEY to complete the rout & his hat-trick. Finishing the game in the centre forward position, he charged down a goal kick to make it four before a cool finish would complete the morning`s work. FT Stingers 5 Wheatley Wanderers Blue 1
