Stop it with Buck “trying to lose” Jeter’s last game. He’s made no secret of how he enjoys sticking it to the first team that fired him as manager. ... He often remarks about how New York (and Boston) get undue attention by the media. Last night, all we saw was more Showalter auditioning a bunch of relievers — McFarland, Webb, Saunders and Meek (and maybe even Matusz) — who are probably on the bubble of getting on the playoff roster and seeing how they might perform in a high-pressure situation. ... The atmosphere in that stadium was at a frantic, fever pitch — much like a road playoff game that they’ll see in a week and a half. Why not use it to prepare for the playoffs? Some did well in their tests, and some (cough-cough Meek), didn’t. Don’t try to blame Buck for trying to get a feel for his playoff roster. I blame three uncharacteristic fielding errors more than anything. There was no rigging or grooving.
