Stories from Working Retail: red sale signs. The store is having a sale, and they have accidentally sent us a double or triple shipment of these red sale signs in a variety of sizes. An entire PALLET of sale signs. I am told to put up EVERY single one of them. All. Of. Them. No excuses. To illustrate to you how ridiculous a request it was, the store is AWASH in red by the time I am done. There are multiple sale signs on the same shelf. There are so many sale signs, you could hardly see the product being sold. Looking out into the store from the front, it is a sea of red sale signs. A woman walks in. I greet her. Then she looks right at me, and says, Are you having a sale? ... It is at this point I could not contain myself. My eyes glass over, and I turn my head, looking over the vast poppy field that is the store. She follows my gaze, and I swear - her eyes widen. With a barely contained laugh and a smirk, I say ....Yes. Yes we are. Then we both start laughing. A full on laugh attack has both of us, and she has tears in her eyes before we come to our senses. I helped her buy some art supplies (on SALE!).
