Story Time: Late 1970s. I got up feeling a little queesy. Nevertheless, I ate a hearty breakfast of Puffed Rice and Cranberry Juice. Yes, you read that correctly, do they still even make puffed rice?? Anyway, off to school I went. Band, I believe, was first hour. I was seated to the right of Sandy Beling and Ed Belhumer (I was always seated to the right of them). Just as we were to begin another rendition of The, Green, Green Grass of Home or maybe is was Greensleeves the world started to spin and up came a quart of canberry juice and puffed rice. I remember, vividly, Sandys shoes as she shoved back her chair in a desperate attempt to excape my back-splash. Larry Baker rushed over in an effort to get me outside before the whole room was engulfed in my terrible concoction. He succeeded, but by then I was all done. My sax hung from my neck covered in goop. Ill never forget his line as we stood shivering in the parking lot, Phil, I dont know what to tell you about your horn. The school day was over for me and I trudged back to lower Elm St. When I got back to school the next day, the White Pine rumor-mill had been fully engaged. Apparently, some horrific disease had casued me to projectile vomit a caustic mixture of snotballs and blood. The lesson of this story is that, at least during flu season, it is wise to stick to corn flakes.
