Story from a workshop: ......the Elder stopped to take a drink of water and then continued, ‘my relatives, in this short story, we learned like Iskwêw; our relationships with ourselves can deepen, but it is very much dependent on a choice that we make towards supporting our own healing. The story also told us about lateral violence and how intergenerational impacts due to the harmful effects of our history still impact our families today. Today I ask you to be patient with your healing and your families healing, but at the same time, I ask you to be kind and compassionate to yourself. Only you can teach others how to treat you. You must decide to treat yourself in the same way that you would treat a highly respected Elder, because if you choose to treat yourself as the worst person in the world, not only will people treat you in the same regard you hold yourself, but you will treat yourself in the direct esteem in which you hold yourself in. My dear ones, if you could picture the pure spirit that you have within, would you sully it by scarring it with bad and negative thoughts or would you choose to do this to another person’s pure spirit. I hope your answer is always no. I pray your answer is always that you choose instead to honour your spirit and honour other’s spirits and by doing that, your relationships become sacred.’ With that, the Elder requested that everyone turn to their neighbour and say, ‘I honour the pure spirit within you.’ As the people in the audience performed this loving action, a beautiful energy embraced every person in attendance.
