Story time: Today, my old friend Justin Arciaga gave me this bass. I first encountered this instrument when I was 15 years old; watching Justins band, The Brigands, at my first DIY show. My friend Sara Keiser Scott had rented out a community center for her birthday, and invited a bunch of the bands from the surrounding area to play. Im not being hyperbolic when I say that it was the first time in my life that I felt like I belonged somewhere. This year Ill be 30 years old, next year Ill be married. And, unless I drop dead the year after that, I will continue to book and attend shows in strange new basements, spend weeks stuck in a smelly van with my friends, and get overly excited about hardcore records written by kids a decade younger than myself. Nick Kostas Kratsas and Rob Morton, were at the same show, and theyre still spilling their guts onto dank cellar floors and stages thick with grime. Still, to all the people who no longer find themselves yelling words into microphones, thanks for showing me Minor Threat, AFI, The Misfits and Snapcase. Thanks for handing me flyers. Thanks for being so cool that I could barely believe you existed. It has been well over a decade; but its still weird that I got to shows, and I dont see you all there.
