Strange Fruit is a song written by Abel Meeropol and performed most famously by Billie Holiday. The song is about the brutal oppression and lynching of African Americans in the U.S. South. Among the song’s many references, the poplar tree is referenced, as it is the state tree of Tennessee, where the original Ku Klux Klan was formed in 1865. The reference to the magnolia is the state flower and motto of Mississippi, where nearly one out of every ten lynchings in the U.S. occurred between the end of the Civil War and the height of the Civil Rights movement.
