Strap in: I got something to say! :) Looking back on 2014, I wish I could say Im shocked by how no ones recently posted anything about Bill Cosby, Robin Williams, Ferguson, Ice Buckets or Ebola on Facebook. Go through your timeline yourself and see how many of your friends are the armchair activists that cant understand theyre impeding progress by spamming an opinion on an array of topics. In the end, most of them wont be impacted no matter the conclusion. I fear that sensationalism is causing a lot of my friends to become mini-Al Sharptons minus the visibility: race baiting, attention wh*res that instantly force those who are rational to tune out simply by speaking, yet adding only noise. Maybe the court of public opinion isnt the true north that most Americans think it is. The court of public opinion holds too much sway in our lives. Think about it! Its the same court that was once pro slavery, anti choice, anti gay rights, and pro segregation. The same court that still condemns Casey Anthony, and at one time believed Scott Peterson. Maybe there is a place for our judicial system. Maybe its worth trusting juries of our peers to handle the national discussion on a case to case basis rather than thinking we know better regardless of evidence that may not have even been presented yet. Maybe its better to be a little more critical of our sources. But then again, Nancy Grace has never abused her position to create sensationalist, uninformed, or damaging views of people. So yea, lets totally nip ALS in the bud! Happy New Year.
