Stressed from your activities? Dont give up yet. They may lead to more happiness by days end. People who work hard increasing their competency – whether at work, school, or the gym – may experience more stress and frustration in the moment. But their hard work pays off. A recent study from the Journal of Happiness Studies found that despite this stress, working hard at improving a skill or ability creates greater happiness in the long term. No pain, no gain is the rule when it comes to gaining happiness from increasing our competence at something, says Ryan Howell, assistant professor of psychology at San Francisco State University. The study examined whether people who spent time fulfilling three psychological needs – competency, autonomy (self-driven activities in line with an interest or goal), and a connection with others – experienced greater happiness. Each hour for two days, participants reported how they spent their time, levels of enjoyment and stress, and if psychological needs were being met. A control group completed a similar survey, but on each day as a whole. The researchers found that behaviors which increase competency were associated with decreased happiness momentarily but increased satisfaction with the entire day. Behaviors that met the need for autonomy or a connection to others, on the other hand, increased happiness both hourly and daily. People often give up their goals because they are stressful, but we found that there is benefit at the end of the day from learning to do something well...You don’t have to reach your goal to see the benefits to your happiness and well-being. To decrease this momentary stress, Howell recommends balancing high-competency activities with autonomy by choosing activities in line with your beliefs and connecting with others to complete the activities. When you complete an activity that benefits your greater goals or wellbeing, it’s important to view it as a victory, no matter how small. The Victory Log from our Effortless Success course is a simple technique for reminding yourself of these victories, building self-esteem, and empowering your intentions in times of momentary frustration. Every night – or at the end of the work day – record all the successes of the day in your log or journal. It could include calling a new business contact, working out at the gym, or completing the first chapter of your first book. Whenever you are experiencing frustration or stress from your activities, go back and read your Victory Log to remind yourself of your successes. Seeing all you have accomplished as the day ends is a powerful way to boost your confidence. It will make you happier and inspire you to greater action tomorrow.
