Strict invigilation makes engineering students go berserk Nearly 200 students of a private engineering college here in Siliguri on Tuesday went on a rampage, damaging six CCTV cameras and smashing window panes of the administrative office. The fourth-year students accused the college authorities of exercising rigid vigilance during an exam. They said that had the invigilation been lenient, all examinees would have done well. Exams for B Tech, BBA, BCA, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunications and IT are being held at the institute. “The examinations started at 10am and continued till 1pm. But the invigilators were very rigid. The students were not even allowed to turn their heads. The examinees did not get any chance to hold discussions among themselves, which is a common practice here,” said a student. Another student alleged that an official had assured a section of the students the invigilation would not be so strict. “But it turned out otherwise and this triggered the tension,” said the student. Institute director Sukumar Roy Chowdhury said a section of the students had been trying to resort to unfair means and this was why they had adopted stringent measures. “We cannot tolerate such things as we are committed to holding transparent examinations. And no teacher had assured them of being lenient as we uphold professionalism”, said Chowdhury. (HS)
