Strike! While its most likely not going to be like this over here (the picture shows striking workers in Winnipeg, 1919), public service in my region will be hit by a token strike today. All municipal public transport will be out of service the whole day today - in an urban region larger than greater Berlin (actually, its the fifth largest urban area in Europe, right after Istanbul, Moscow, London and Paris!). Theres going to be commuter traffic jams on the highways and large winnings for taxi companies today... about a million people, normally using public transport to get to work in this region will have to find an alternative way... Other municipal services on strike today are kindergartens and garbage disposal... The focus of the union demands are the public transport employees, who want a 3.5 per cent raise of their salaries... considering that public service didnt have a raise in years, this might just cover inflation. Well, I pre-booked my taxi to get to work yesterday already... thanks to web-based taxi services.
