#StrikeOutALS #effectivealtruism #scopeneglect Theres a famous psychology study where respondents were asked how much they would pay to protect 2000, 20000, and 200000 birds from an oil spill. The mean results were $80, $78, and $88, respectively. This proves that psych study respondents dont know how to multiply. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scope_neglect ALS is a horrific and debilitating disease in a world full of horrific and debilitating diseases. Many of these are preventable and treatable. I firmly believe that those who have the means to prevent, treat, or research these diseases in themselves have some obligation to try to do the same for those who dont have the means, like many ALS patients and like the vast majority of malaria patients. Thats why Im donating $10 to ALSA, which funds ALS research, and $100 to the Against Malaria Foundation, which distributes mosquito netting. AMF is or has been recommended by several Effective Altruism (i.e. utilitarian charity) organizations, including GiveWell, Giving What We Can, and The Life You Can Save. Im nominating Anjit, Eli, and Weldy for the ALS Ice Bucket challenge. Weldy must complete the challenge using a hang glider. Nominees have 24 hours to comply (although if it takes longer than that to procure a hang-glider-based ice bucket, I guess theres some wiggle room).
