To learn more, visit sandia.gov. Department Description The Informatics and Systems Assessments department is focused on applications of interest to national security. We conduct research in information security engineering as well as fundamental computer science and mathematics. The specialties of our technical staff represent a wide range of disciplines including machine learning, linear and multilinear algebra, cloud-based data analysis, binary reverse engineering, network protocol analysis, and botnet/malware analysis and mitigation. Our researchers regularly publish their work in leading journals and conferences. Our work is funded by various U.S. government agencies, including the Department of Energy. Job Summary Performs entry-level work within a science and engineering environment involving assignments that may include assisting with research, application of project design and diagnostics, testing and documentation, development and analysis of technology options, and assembly and troubleshooting. Primary Job Duties Job assignments vary upon organization, discipline preference, and specific job requirements as defined in the job specification. Duties may include assisting technical staff with developmental research, analysis of technology and engineering options, project design, testing, formulating conclusions, data collection, and analyzing experimental data. Additional Information: We have student intern openings in the areas of informatics, applied mathematics, computer science, and statistics. The work of the Informatics and Systems Assessments Department at Sandia/California combines research in applied mathematics, statistics, and computer science with expertise in computer and network defense. Our work impacts a wide variety of applications in cyber defense, homeland security, network engineering, data management, along with additional areas. Our results are published in leading technical journals and conferences, and much of our software is freely available to the research community. The successful candidate will be pursuing an undergraduate degree in informatics or data sciences, numerical methods, network and graph algorithms, or cyber defense. The interns will be involved in conducting innovative research, developing open-source software, and communicating their research through written reports and oral presentations. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities General knowledge of technical principles and processes. Understanding of the use a variety of research tools. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to contribute in a team environment. General knowledge of project management. General knowledge and good understanding of a suite of software, including Microsoft Office. Required The successful candidate must meet the following Sandia Student Intern Requirements: Official acceptance into an accredited universitys undergraduate program, full-time enrollment during the spring term immediately preceding the internship period (12 credit hours), a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2/4.0, and the ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the internship duration. U.S. citizenship. Additional Requirements: The successful candidate should: be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related area; have the ability to work in a collaborative research environment; have evidence of relevant expertise in the form of class work, technical publications, presentations, software, and/or knowledge of applications; possess software development competence in C++, C, Java, MATLAB, or a related language; and have strong written and oral communication skills. Desired In addition, it is desired that the candidate have expertise in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, data mining, graph analysis, linear algebra, applied statistics, optimization, computational combinatorics, discrete mathematics, cyber defense; software engineering proficiency, including an understanding of object-oriented programming techniques and best practices, high performance computing experience, and/or large scale data knowledge; and a background in solving practical problems in science and engineering that involve encounters with real-world data. Security Clearance No clearance required. This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment. If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation.
