Students and activists from Delhi University protested in large numbers today against the Four Year Undergraduate Program, both inside the DU campus as at India Gate. Several students were detained and arrested during the protest, while supporters strongly condemned the actions of the government and police. Included was an effigy burning of DU Vice Chancellor MHRD minister Pallam Raju and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at 11AM from the Faculty of Arts, Delhi University, North Campushere. Students and activists called for the immediate end of the "forced implementation of the anti-student and imperialist designs of FYUP (Four Year Undergraduate Program) in DU and other universities", stopping the privatization of education, fighting the brahmanical hegemony over education and condemning the ploy of excluding students from marginalized and oppressed sections of society from the mainstream of education through the “multiple exit point” strategy of the Program. "This is a serious attack on higher education," said activist Arundhuti Roy, "They are saying it’s going to help employ people. When they were building dams on Narmada or mines in Dantewada all they say is you are going to get jobs. We all know that we are not going to get jobs."
