Students at the University of Oklahoma are exclusively invited for a sneak peak on Thursday of a new exhibition at the museum. Each semester, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art hosts a student opening party for students to view the newest exhibition. This semester, students will be able to have an exclusive look at 7 p.m. Thursday at the exhibition Allen Houser Drawings: The Centennial Exhibition curated by Jackson Rushing, a University of Oklahoma professor. “The museum wants to encourage students to experience our special exhibitions before the public viewing through an event just for them,” said Susan Baley, director of education at the museum. The Allen Houser Drawings: The Centennial Exhibition will exhibit one hundred of Houser’s drawings and a vast majority of them have never been exhibited or even published before. His works include paintings, drawings and sculptures. “Because of the intimacy and accessibility of the drawings, the exhibition will offer a fresh perspective on this renowned American Master,” according ou.edu/fjjma. Along with the viewing of the exhibition, students will be able to enjoy light refreshments, punch and live entertainment by Bruce Benson & Studio B, a blues music band from Oklahoma City. “You might be wondering what blues has to do with an exhibit of Native American art. Allan Houser was actually the lead singer of a blues band and performed at his own 80th birthday party,” said Jessica Farling, curator of academic programs at the museum. The museum is expecting approximately 500 students to attend but will give free sketchbooks to the first 50 students who arrive in order to encourage students to show up on time. The event is sponsored and catered by OU Housing & Food Services and is free for all University of Oklahoma students.
