Students dont give up junk food easily, and most schools authorities, even Ram, have to strike a compromise. On Fridays, which Ram calls an off day for mothers, students are allowed to bring what they like. Rest of the week, they bring cooked home food. Also, all classes till third grade get a fruit break. Taking pizzas and samosas off the menu isnt always an option, so schools try to make healthier versions of these. Tania Joshi, principal, The Indian School, says their versions of pizza and samosa-not considered junk because they contain vegetables-have more wholewheat flour than refined flour. Till class 2, we have mid-day meals. The theme for this year is western states, she says. For older students, the school canteen has meals of the cereal-and-curry variety, and teachers inspect lunch boxes to ensure packets of chips arent sneaked in.
