Student’s suggestion on UBD priority DEAR EDITOR, Wednesday, December 3, 2014 I WOULD like to refer to the article ‘UBD builds Olympic-sized swimming pool’ published in The Brunei Times (Nov 7, 2014). The Public Works Department (PWD) Project Coordinator Hj Md Husni Hj Damit said the new swimming pool would follow the international standards set by FINA. Does that mean the swimming pool is only open to professional swimmers? What about ordinary swimmers? Can members of the public use the swimming pool too? From the drawings of the Universiti of Brunei Darussalam’s, the swimming pool and sports complex looks like an outdoor swimming pool. Neither am I a swimmer nor or most of my friends studying in UBD. The expansion of the Sports Complex, awarded to Indramas, costs $6 million. The same amount of money could have been used to increase the number of books and facilities in UBD library. Although UBD library has online databases of books and journals, I think it should give more priority in providing material for students, instead of just dreaming to produce Olympians! I am just wondering where does the government stands in terms of education? Which one is important: Sports or education? Second Year UBD Student
