Studio Z in Flux: Phil Fried: Man and Machine Northern Spark 2013 June 9, 2013 2 a.m. Studio Z, 275 East Fourth Street, Suite 200 St. Paul Free Composer and improviser Phil Fried creates both notated music, including a centennial commission from the Minnesota Orchestra for Episodes, and completely improvised solo bass performances. This performance features Phil on string bass in free improvisation mixed with real time electronics, mixed media and guest collaborators. As an improviser, his most recent collaborations include an improvised score for Mathew Janczewski’s Arena Dances at the Cowles Center in Minneapolis, MN (commissioned by Live Music for Dance Minnesota from the American Composers Forum), and Heid E. Erdrich and her poetry performance ensemble “Pilot Car.” His recent notated works include a collaboration with Chicago playwright, Ruth Margraff to recreate her play Locket Arias as a one act opera.
