#StudyFiqh - Islamic Jurisprudence Part 17 How will we study Fiqh? Fiqh is either studied according to one madh-hab (School of Thought) or according to the various schools of fiqh recognized by the ummah as well as the opinions of independent scholars simultaneously, and that is called “fiqh muqaran” (comparative fiqh) . In my opinion and the opinion most of the scholars recommend is for the beginner on the path of the serious seeking of knowledge to start with one madh-hab. In this series, we will follow a classical matn (Text) of fiqh, which is how I was taught. Over the years I have translated a number of sections of Classical Fiqh that have been used, alhamdulillah, by many, some online and others in book form, Allah grant us its reward and protect it from insincerity and error. I debated within myself which matn (Text) to use and which madh-hab to teach.I have decided to do a HANBALI text titled al-Umdah by Imam Ibn Qudaamah and use the udaah as its explanation (SHARH) along with the notes i have on it from my previous study of the text. The matn is meant to be decisive and easy to memorize by the students of knowledge. Why did I choose a Hanbali text? Many people are not exposed to a text, let alone a Hanbali text and it will be very useful in highlighting the various opinions that may conflict. Of course, When the need arises we will refer to the opinion of the Imams who disputed the position held and show the evidence to refute them as need be or show the legitimacy of their opinion. We will look at the two main categories of FIQH: 1- Fiqh of Worship (fiqh al-‘ebadat) and 2-Fiqh of Interpersonal Dealings and Personal Conduct (fiqh al-mu’amalat wa al-adaab ash- shar’eyah). Fiqh al-‘ebadaat includes the chapters of Purification, Prayers, Funerals, Zakat, Fasting and Pilgrimage. That is where we will begin shortly insha Allah! I hope through this journey that you will have studied important issues that relate to your worship with me and that we are both rewarded. AMEEN!
