Stumbled across this article tonight: bleacherreport/articles/1448087-signing-stephen-drew-is-a-mistake-for-boston-red-sox Two gems in this one: By signing Stephen Drew, Boston is exchanging defense for offense.... So why not go with the 22-year-old prospect over a 29-year-old DL machine who is going to do more harm than good to the pitching staff? The AL East will be a gauntlet this season, and Boston is not in a position to compete. That front office needs to cut their losses and start building towards 2014 and beyond. Ohh Jonathan Irwin. I cant blame you too much for the second comment, just about everyone though that at the time, but the next time you deem a free agent signing as a defensive liability, you might want to actually watch some game film. Besides his DP companion on the other side, does anyone turn a better double play? Not to mention a few basic stats... Drew has the 12th best fielding percentage of all time amongst SS. Thats better than Ozzie Smith, hardly a defensive liability. Yes, his career range factor is only 125th all time, but its still better than Derek Jeters. He also managed to improve that this year to 4th in the AL. I think Drew was the perfect 1 year signing and I really hope he can feather his cap with a big hit tomorrow so that our last memory of him isnt going 0 for everything in the World Series.
