Styrofoam lightning - In Peru there lived a little boy Named Luis. Luis lived nearby the mountains. One night Luis was telling his mommy that he was afraid to go to school because some big bullies were bothering him . His mommy told him he would be brave and right after she said that they both saw the brightest flash of lightning and seconds later BOOM -The loudest thunder ever !!!!! Luis and his mommy talked about the lightning and how it was one of the most spectacular things in the world, capable of creating massive fires and with enough power to light up all of Peru. Luis told his mother that he wanted to be just like the lightning so he would have the power to defeat the bullies. His mommy nodded about how brilliant lightning can be but cautioned him about the danger as well as the splendor of mother nature. She taught him how to calculate the distance of the lightning by counting the seconds between the flash of light and the thunder crash. When he discovered that the lightning was only 3 miles away he thought that if he could get to the top of the mountain he would grab the lightning for himself. But in the meantime, he and his mom decided they would draw a big picture of the mountain positioning Luis at the top of the mountain with his hands stretching towards the heavens. Then they decided they would make lightning out of Styrofoam, then tie the Styrofoam lightning to a piece of yarn so that the prop would drop from the ceiling. Then they took a picture, making it look like Luis in the picture was holding and possessing the lightning prop . Luis and his mom liked making props for plays. They also liked making costumes and drawing pictures. This was the perfect activity to keep their minds off the bullies at school. Luis wanted to take the Styrofoam lightning with him to school as a powerful symbol of his newfound bravery. The next morning he went to school as planned with his Styrofoam lightning and picture of himself on the mountain reaching high towards the heavens. When it was his turn for show and tell he brought up his picture and props and broke into a story about the majestic power of lightning. The story was a hit with his classmates. In fact one kid named David approached him afterwards and told him that he had the same discussion with his mom and dad last night about the very lightning Luis described. David was a big kid that was new to school. Luis told David about the story behind this picture & lightning and how he had been bullied by big bothersome boys. Davids face lit up as bright as the lightning. He told Luis that he used to be bullied around at his previous school. This was before he grew bigger and braver. David promised Luis that because of their new friendship the bullies would be no longer a threat. Suddenly a little girl named Lucia approached the conversation and said, Luis I loved your story about the lightning ! My family are farmers and when we see the lightning we know the rain is coming - Will you help draw a picture of me standing on the mountain next to the lightning so I can show it to my family? to be continued
