Sub; Invitation to the Regional level Consultation on Child Rights Observatory in Kerala on 24th July 2013 at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kalamassery The Rights of the children have always been considered with great importance internationally. With the emergence of UN Convention on the rights of the child in 1989, the research, action and monitoring on the implementation of the rights of the children are in place in most of the countries. Kerala has always been in the forefront in many of the social development indicators. But it still has regional disparities in the lines of poorly performing states. The Development sector in Kerala had been a model to many other states especially on issues related to children. Child Rights observatory is a new initiative at the international level. Six countries have their own child rights observatories in different forms, as research groups, as think tank groups, as NGO networks etc. Similar initiatives are being implemented in India too, in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for some time. The child rights observatory alias the Child Rights Watch is expected to play the role of a watch dog committee that keeps a close observation of all the actions, commissions and omissions of different stake holders that have a say in the well being of the children in the state. The child rights observatory may keep a watch on the following · The Policies of the Government o Direct children policies – on Education, Noon Meals, Social Welfare, Social Defence etc. o Policies on Health, Water, Sanitation etc that will have an impact on the well being of the children · The Implementation of Right to Education Act in the state · The Judicial Process involving children · The functions of JJB and CWCs · The trade and industrial practices that allow children to be employed in the factory or in the manufacturing process / or service · The portrayal of children in media o The reality shows o Children in news etc The List is not exhaustive In order to accomplish this, we are organizing a regional level consultation on Wednesday 24th July 2013 at Father Jose Alex Hall, Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kalamassery from 9.30 am-4.30 pm.
