You are married to a French citizen of North African Arab descent. I assume she is a French speaker. I can bet most French speaking European and Canadians (and even North Africans) ask you what “dialecte” you speak in your “groupe ethnique” -NOT what “langue” you speak or what “nationalite” you belong to! they may even be dissappointed that your mother looks “dressed” in a busuti as opposed to the leaves they expect her to be dressed in! Your music has got a “primitive” beat and is “wild”! The cultures “derogatively” termed as subcultures or “vassal” states were not termed so by Baganda anthropologists! They were actually termed so by your friends from Europe and North America! Derogatory and denigrating language is a part of mainstream French and other European languages. Subliminal and demeaning terms many coined by racist European anthropologists like tribe, ethnic(que), native, dialect(e), primitive etc immediately place your culture below that of “nations, your “dialecte” below that of those who speak “languages”! Your ire is therefore misdirected! Contrary to what you state, your culture is derogatively termed as a subculture or worse from day one in your socially more evolved country! You are “ethnic” or “tribal” and your language a dialect! Worse still your being both the above and a politically conscious muslim makes you a perfect profilers dream! If you doubt me pick up a local paper or listen to talk back radio!
