Subject: Final Will & Testament You would not believe how many of my family, friends and/or acquaintances do not have an up-to-date Will or family lawyer ready to handle their estate. My guess is that 6 of 10 will say their Will has not been updated in maybe 8-10 years – or more and 4 of 10 have no Will at all. For a few, that may suffice. I try not to laugh when someone says my uncle is a lawyer” or “my best friend is a lawyer”. That does not answer the question – which is “What would happen should you get run over by a Metro Bus or Train or have a car-wreck on the way home tonight? Most folks have no immediate answer, and 2 of 10 might ask me for the name of my lawyer. My 1st caution is; Without a Will, the State of MD will take 12% of everything you own. I know, for a fact, that NJ will take 18% off the top. They will not ask you for it nor will they thank you. My 2nd caution is that everyone needs to have a good lawyer available – regardless of age, wealth or status – without it, you will unnecessarily burden others. My family Lawyer, Thomas A. Gentile [Gen-till-lee] has been with me for nearly 25 years. Cicely and I found him in our Church Bulletin and he and I still go to St. John the Evangelist. With his knowledge, and as part of his informal ‘public relations’, I’ve given his bus. cards or printed Profile-page to nearly 5 doz. in recent years. Am currently negotiating with a Realtor/Prop.Mgr. who will serve as “Landlord/Agent” on my Will – Very important! In closing: At my age, as a widower and cancer survivor, having no biological children and living alone, I feel it is imperative that my Will be current – and it is. As I have no Catholic relatives living close by, I found it necessary to have a Catholic (POA) Power Of Attorney to handle my funeral/burial/mass - Jane Derengowski, a widow and neighbor of ours since 1986, still living at our former condo, and going to my Church. We frequently see each other at the Limerick Pub on Sunday, then join up for brunch. Jane’s a Departmental Director at Comcast (TV), Inc. in Silver Spring, MD and a friend of my lawyer.
