Subject: Thank You For Contacting My Office From: [email protected] To: b.arnold Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2013 12:05:26 -0500 Dear Mr. Arnold: Thank you for contacting me regarding the defunding and repeal of Obamacare. I know how passionately Texans feel about this issue, and I appreciate the benefit of your comments. All Americans should be exempt from the onerous and costly provisions of Obamacare and the best way to do this is to repeal and defund the law in its entirety. Texans continue to share with me real-life examples of how this law is hurting businesses, killing jobs, and burdening individuals with costlier premiums. Obamacare spends $2.6 trillion over a ten year period. Additionally, it raises taxes by more than a trillion dollars over the next decade—negatively impacting job growth and the economy. These taxes include a substantially higher Medicare payroll tax, which could harm small businesses, and new taxes on medical treatments, which will ultimately mean higher costs for patients. Furthermore, Obamacare will cut more than half a trillion dollars from the nearly-bankrupt Medicare program to create unsustainable new entitlement programs. All Americans should receive relief from this law. To this end, I am proud to cosponsor the Obamacare Repeal Act (S. 177), which would repeal the health care reform law, as well as the Defund Obamacare Act of 2013 (S. 1292), which would prohibit funding of Obamacare. Additionally, I introduced the Keep the IRS Off Your Health Care Act (S. 983), which would prohibit the Secretary of the Treasury from enforcing Obamacare, and the Protecting Seniors’ Access to Medicare Act (S. 351), which would repeal the Obamacare Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). In total, I have introduced or cosponsored 27 bills to repeal or defund Obamacare. I was pleased when the House of Representatives listened to the American people and sent the Senate a Continuing Resolution (CR) that defunded Obamacare. However, Democrats ignored the pleas of the American people and stripped the language that defunded Obamacare. House Republicans continued to send reasonable packages to the Senate that would have funded the government but provided relief for Americans from this law, including bills that would have delayed Obamacare for a year, permanently repealed the Medical Device Tax, delayed Obamacare’s individual mandate, and required that Congressional members and staff live under the same rules as the American people. I was disappointed that Senate Democrats rejected these reasonable compromises, and I voted against the final Senate CR that included funding for Obamacare. At every opportunity to defund or repeal the law, I have voted in favor of doing so, and I will not waver in my opposition to this law. I appreciate having the opportunity to represent Texas in the United States Senate. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.
