Subsequent to a lunch date with friends, I stopped by the store to shop for groceries. Having filled my cart with meats, produce, dairy and household products, I casually rolled up and entered the line for checkout. At a quick glance at my grocery list that I had neglected to follow, I had neglected to include two items; but first, I showed the cashier my ID and immediately left to claim the forgotten lemons and yams. When I returned, the bagger began leading me to customer service while saying surpringly, “Your check didn’t go through.” Forthwith, a superior employee greeted me and uttered the same, “Mrs. Ivey, your check did not go through.” Befuddled, I asked, ‘Why?’ I had never had a single bounced check in the many years I had been a customer. A wave of heat enveloped my being. I was thoroughly uncomfortable with this exchange. “The company that we use has put a lock on your account,” she responded. ‘Why would they do that?’ “It could be identity theft!” she suggested. ‘What?!!!’ I shouted anxiously. “Well, we’re not sure. Would you like to use our phone to speak with them?” she asked kindly. ‘Yes,’ I replied resoundingly. Within seconds, I was on the telephone communicating with the store’s bank. I was questioned intensely: What is your name? May I have your birth date? What is you account number? What number comes after your account number? What is your routing number? Do you have some other kind of identification? Will you read the number that’s on your driver license? “Will you repeat the number, please?” I read the number for a second time. I was really frustrated and progressively growing impatient and agitated. Embarrassed and mortified that someone would look in my direction and suspect that I was being deceptive, I turned neither left nor right. I stared only forward in perturbation. At that very moment, the bank hiree and I both noticed that the Publix cashier had written an incorrect license number. “Now, have them run your check through,” the banker suggested. This time the transaction was successful. The customer personnel were very regretful and apologetic for that mistake, and I was relieved.
