Success with floor-coverings is not found in selecting a good material, it is found in selecting the right material for YOUR project. There are few places where the right product is more crucial than the utility entrance area of an active home. Especially if that home happens to be in a rural setting with seasons like we have here in Vermont. Sure, there are plenty of great industrial style walk-off mats available with their heavy vinyl backings and plastic bristles that do work well. That is, if you dont mind your home looking like an ATM lobby at a bank or bus terminal. There is, however, a centuries old natural alternative that is just as durable as any synthetic mat, yet, it looks great too. That material is coir. ((pronounced coy-yer)) Not to be confused with sisal, hemp, jute, abaca, aloe, nettle or seagrass, coir is perhaps one of the most under appreciated of the plant or vegetable fiber mattings. The coir fiber is spun from the husks of coconuts and is water friendly and is often used on boats and around pools. Unlike sisal, that is prone to color shifts if saturated, coir actually benefits from exposure to water. It is resistant to bacteria and, because it refuses to hold dyes, it is difficult to stain. The coarse fiber is excellent for cleaning the underside of shoes and the large weave structure is exceptional for capturing and holding particulate matter for easy removal with a vacuum. Add a fabric trim for an element of color and finished edge and that mud room or utility entrance can be just as stylish as any other room in your home without ever compromising the performance requirements of the space. From rustic to sophisticated, the uses and positive attributes of this fiber are plentiful. The following photos show this wonderful material in closer detail in a real world application for an active family home with multiple children, pets and all which that entails.
