Successful 5th SAINT LUCIA STUDIES CONFERENCE June 12th & 13th 2014 The 5th Saint Lucia Studies Conference came to a successful conclusion on Friday 13th June at the CDF Conference Room. The Conference recognised the centenary of the birth of Harold Simmons. A wide-ranging number of subjects were presented over two days. Among these were a study of St. Lucian pottery in a regional, multidisciplinary context by Patricia Fay of the USA; experiences of children of East Indian immigrants in the years 1859-1900 by Dr. Kyneata Joseph, St. Lucian professor who lectures in Trinidad; the role of Kwéyòl in the local legal system by Dr. Sandra Evans of St. Lucia who also teaches in Trinidad; Dr. Sonia Alexander of Monroe College gave a very informative paper on Dengue fever; and what was of immense interest in these days of court-house crapeaus, Vladimir Lucien, St. Lucian M Phil student at UWI, St. Agustine, presented a look at “power, status and respectability among Tjenbwatè”, or the place of obeah practitioners among us. Among other presenters were Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte, Dr. Kentry JnPierre and Travis Weekes. A special video presentation on the life and work of Harold Simmons was presented by Dr. Didacus Jules, who is now the OECS Director-General. It was titled “Harold Simmons – reflections on an astigmatic saint.” The theme of the Conference was “Discovering ourselves – recent research on St. Lucia.” The key note address was delivered by Dr. Merle St. Clair - Auguste, Vice Principal of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College at an opening ceremony attended by H.E. Dame Pearlette Louisy, Governor General of St. Lucia and the Honorable Dr. Robert Lewis, Minister of Education. Among others present were members of the Simmons family who gathered to honour the centenary of the birth of Harold Simmons. The Cultural Development Foundation had partnered with the FRC to host this event.
