In the arena of this topic, multiple people have told me to calm down as if my frustration were a matter of me acting irrational, sensitive, or too serious. Women who are fed up with being harassed are not encouraged to speak out, resist or express their concern, in fact, we aren’t necessarily even “encouraged” to shut up about it, we are instead shamed into silence by comments that attempt to downplay the seriousness of street harassment. Street harassment will not stop while so many people perpetuate complacent and unconcerned attitudes towards it. It will not end by implementing band aid solutions like more security cameras or making police forces take more action. Street harassment will cease to be the norm when, as a collective society, we become socially conscious of the root of these actions and their effects. It will cease to be the norm, not by one specific thing, but by a multitude of actions and attitudes that help to tear at the fabric of a world of violence and domination.
