Such remarks show a profound lack of understanding of how the British pension system works. These extra benefits are not the icing on the cake; they are the cake itself. They were introduced because the basic state pension has been held down by successive governments. In 1979 the basic state pension was equivalent to 26 per cent of average earnings. By 2011 it was worth only 17 per cent of the average wage. Older voters, and there are 12 million of them, have paid their dues for decades and are dismayed that they may not get what is owing to them while countless welfare claimants who have paid in nothing seem to get everything as a matter of course.
