Suffice it to say that to Allah alone belongs all praise. In response to the #askMALM question: Can men wear jewellery? Yes men are allowed to wear jewellery which is designed for men and which doesnt include gold. By default actions including dress, jewellery etc. Are all permissible until conclusively proven otherwise. However the debate streches the following: There is some jewellery which is unanimously accepted by all scholars for men e.g. silver ring as worn by the Prophet (saw), simple non metal necklaces for boys as worn by the Prophets (saw) grandson Hasan [Bukhari], gold teeth for dental reasons as worn by many companions. Beyond this there is a disagreement; Group A: Believe anything beyond the above was not an overriding custom in the Prophets (saw) time, therefore resembles women and falls under the prohibition of imitating women. Group B: Believe that the convention determines what is perceived as woman-like, and there is a clear category of Mens jewellery e.g. bracelets, necklaces etc. So it doesnt fall into the prohibition mentioned above. Furthermore various narrations showing that other jewellery items were worn by men in the Prophets (saw) era e.g. Bracelets as being foreseen by the Prophet (saw) for Suraqa (r.a.) and being given to wear by Umar (r.a.), the hadith about piercing the ear of the young boy for his Aqiqah etc. In addition to the Usooli principles such as العادات محكمة that convention is what determines. Our understanding falls in line with the latter group, and each to his own. & absolute knowledge belongs to Allah alone. Duas Wasalam Mufti *for any questions, remember the hashtag #askMALM
