Suffice to say I love this song but enough of me talking - this is a random review of the PHs I found by Jack Rabid; Theyve retired the Alisons Halo name, as well as what they now consider a been-there, done-that dream pop sound. OK, got it. I think they were obscure enough to not have much of a reputation hanging over them that they need to jettison. But heres hoping it gives them a new start and newfound respect, similar to what one of their biggest influences, Slowdive, did in making a similar leap into the great Mojave 3. That is to say anyone waiting for their older wall-of-guitar effects blasts will initially be disappointed, but likely will then fall even harder for this brisk, jaunty, more pepper-pot pop. It walks along a similar line as modern stylists like Ivy, only with a more confident live vocalist. Frontwoman/guitarist Catherine continues to be the face, the star, and the pipes. With the more stripped-down backing, she has less to compete against and thus shines even more. Her singing was always forceful and comely -- now she carries the whole group and sounds like shes loving it. Not that her man Adam is any less of a force, writing the music for these five bopping songs. In fact, the quality and depth of his ideas is what keeps the Pastry Heroes from sinking into a quagmire of sugary confection. Like the best of the Sub Pop label, they explore the glory of intelligent music for those who are tired of a deluge of guitars, guitars, guitars, but still admire the instrument and all the other things it can do within the usual melodic framework. This is excellent. - and I agree!
